An impressive, record-setting 122 race vehicles jammed the Phillipsburg Mall for the third edition of the IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Car Show, as large throngs of attendees visited the mall Sunday. Local racing - past, present and future - is the focus of attention at the Route 22 East location in Phillipsburg, N.J., through Saturday (March 13) with daily activities planned.
Three hundred racing personalities are slated to participate in the show. A complete listing of driver appearances is posted on the IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Web site: www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.
Steve and Ed Pados of the CarQuest Gasoline Alley TV/Radio program officially kicked off the weeklong show at the stage Sunday afternoon by introducing Greg Collins, representing event sponsor IRCO Community Federal Credit Union and Brett Deyo, who organized the show with founder Bob Miller.
Bob Stull, Orange County (N.Y.)/Accord (N.Y.) announcer Joel Murns and Justin Beltrame joined the Pados brothers during the interviews.
A moment of silence was observed in honor of those in the racing community lost recently.
An all-star cast of past and present driving talent took in the show's opener and interacted with the crowd, including Carl "Fuzzy" Van Horn, David Van Horn, Frankie Schneider, Freddy Adam, Earl Derr, Tom Hager, Butch Tittle, Bill Wilson, George Wambold, Ken Brenn Jr., Bobby Braxton, Fred Dmuchowski, Bruce Kline, Mares Stellfox, Scott Hubler, Neal and Jonathan Kumernitsky, Bobby Rossell, Newt Hartman, Kerry Meitzler, Del Buss, Gary Grim, Richie Smith, Dickie Keiper, David Polenz, Joe Poliacik and many more.
Many of the interviews were recorded for use on the Gasoline Alley show to be aired Monday (March 8).
Attendees were treated to a wide cross-section of race vehicles including big- and small-block Modifieds, Sportsman, Micro-Sprints, vintage and restored cars, Micro-Stocks, ARDC Midgets, dirt and pavement Late Models, Slingshots, XCel Modifieds, Stage One Modifieds, Quarter Midgets and much more.
New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway, the half-mile oval co-owned by Fred Vahlsing and Bill Miscoski and managed by Danny Serrano is well represented at the show. NES competitors Gary, Mike and Clay Butler, Mike Hendershot and Willie Osmun are among those flanking the NES pace truck at the show.
Hometown driver David Van Horn Jr., who announced last week his plans to switch Saturday-night venues, displayed his No. 71 big-block Modified outfitted with New Egypt-legal sail panels.
Competitors from numerous race facilities throughout the region are represented, including Big Diamond (Pa.) Raceway, Grandview (Pa.) Speedway, Hamlin (Pa.) Speedway, Kutztown (Pa.) Fairgrounds Speedway, Borger's (Pa.) Speedway, Shellhammer's (Pa.) Speedway, Old Dominion (Va.), the West End Quarter Midget group and others.
America on Wheels Museum, Snyder Video, Reading Plastic Fabricators, MoTorsport Video Productions along with an expansive, in-store display for J&L Speed Supplies of Hellertown, Pa., are among the exhibitors.
The recently-formed Flemington (N.J.) Speedway Historical Society has a large presence at the show with vintage cars and a salute to the Late Model division at the famed Garden State facility.
The long legacy of racing at Pa.'s Nazareth Speedway is recognized with a display of photos and memorabilia.
Honoring the 40th anniversary of the speedway's 1970 Season Opener, the Harmony (N.J.) Speedway Historical Society is on hand at the IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Show. Photos, race results and articles from the 1970 opener - won by Ray Neary - are on display, along with a number of restored cars.
Through the efforts of noted racing photographer Henry Wilt, Dorney Park (Pa.) Speedway is remembered at the show. Anchoring the Dorney Park display are pictures, vintage sheet metal, collectibles, T-shirts, trophies, driver's suits and more.
The Reading (Pa.) Fairgrounds Racing Historical Society has a presence at the show to honor the history of the famed Berks County track.
