Lanco's Clyde Martin Readies For 56th Season of Micro-Sprint Competition
Newmanstown, PA - Special events and a renewed marketing partnership headline the pre-season news at Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway.
The high banked clay oval, located in Newmanstown, Pa., plays host to five divisions of Micro-Sprints on Saturday nights, and the April 13 opener signifies the start of the Lanco club's 56th season of sanctioning races for the mighty Micros.
Those five classes competing on a weekly basis at the Clyde - all winged Micro-Sprints - are the 600cc, 270cc Two-Stroke, 125cc, Sportsman (250cc Air-Cooled Engines), and 270cc Four-Stroke.
Highlights of the 2013 racing schedule include Fan Appreciation Night on April 27; the Memorial Day Open Show on May 25; the second annual Dick Greenawalt Memorial on June 22; a very special National Slingshot Tour event slated for June 29; Micromania and the 270 Clash at the Clyde on July 6; the Clyde Martin Memorial Race on July 27; and the traditional, two-day Labor Day Shootout on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1st. The point chases will end at the season finale` on September 14.
After its experiment with Fan Appreciation Night last season proved to be an overwhelming success, the club quickly inked the promotion on its 2013 slate of events. On Saturday, April 27, all spectators will be admitted FREE, with many prizes and fan-friendly activities planned for those in attendance.
The 2012 version of Fan Appreciation Night pulled a crowd so large that fans were asked to squeeze together on the spacious bleachers to make room for those arriving a bit late. The enthusiastic, overflow throng roared its approval during each race and when prizes were handed out - which occurred all night long.
The Memorial Day Open Show, an annual affair, will feature 30-lap main events with an increased purse for all five weekly divisions. The 600's, in addition to winged action, will also take part in a full program of non-wing competition. The wingless portion of the night's agenda is the Kerry Gilbert Memorial, run in honor of the former racer and Vice President of the Lanco club.
The Greenawalt Memorial pays tribute to the Clyde's long time track photographer who suddenly and unexpectedly passed away in the summer of 2011.
Perhaps the most highly anticipated race meet on the 2013 Lanco calendar is the June 29 "Slide at the Clyde", when the All Star Slingshots, created by Rich Tobias in the late '90's, visit the Newmanstown speedplant.
The Slingshot drivers, who have longed for the opportunity to battle one another on the Clyde Martin clay, can thank a fifteen-year-old member of their group for putting all the pieces together and convincing the Lanco Board that a big race for this division will be a huge success.
Danny Buccafusca, who will be one of the Slingers in action on June 29, worked with the powers-that-be at Lanco to organize the event that will offer a lucrative purse, along with National Tour points. Sponsors are lining up to support the big race; the marketing partners will be announced in the near future.
A large field of Slingshots - scaled down versions of dirt Modifieds - is expected and many have already filed entries for the Slide at the Clyde.
This year's edition of PA 600 Speedweek will kick off at the Clyde on July 6, as Micromania takes center stage for the 600cc Class. Joining the ground-pounding 600's that night will be the 270cc Clash at the Clyde.
Early entry information for Micromania and the Slide at the Clyde can be found on the club's website: www.lancomicrosprint.com.
Weld Racing and the Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway have partnered once again to present the Weld Racing Fast Lap of the Feature and the manufacturer of all types of racing wheels will provide a bonus to all five Lanco point champions at the end of the 2013 campaign.
On a rotating basis, drivers in all five weekly classes will have the chance to win a Weld Racing gift certificate if they can turn the quickest lap during a feature race. Throttle jockeys in one class per night will be eligible for the Weld Racing Fast Lap of the Feature prize.
More valuable gift certificates will be awarded to each point champion at the club's annual banquet in November.
Race times will remain the same in 2013, with gates opening at 3:30 p.m. Warm-ups begin at 5:00, and the first heat race goes green at 6 p.m.
A pre-season practice session is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, and then season No. 56 gets the green light on the 13th of April.
